Boost Pressure Sensors: The Turbo Health Monitor

On turbocharged engines, the ECU monitors boost pressure to control wastegate or variable-vane geometry, set fueling under boost, and detect problems with the turbo or intake system. The boost pressure sensor sits in the intake manifold or charge pipe and reports absolute pressure to the ECU. When the sensor fails, the ECU can no longer trust boost data — drivability suffers and power is usually limited.

Failure modes

Internal sensor element drift — readings become inaccurate. The ECU compensates, but the engine no longer runs at the design boost level. Symptoms: reduced power, fault codes for boost performance.

Carbon contamination — soot from EGR or PCV systems coats the sensor element. Cleaning the sensor with electronic cleaner sometimes recovers it; otherwise replacement.

Electrical failure — wire or connector damage gives no signal at all. Easy diagnosis, easy fix.
