When to replace suspension components
Shock absorbers, springs, top mounts, anti-roll bar links and bushings wear gradually over years and miles — the decline is invisible day to day but compounds into worse ride quality, faster tyre wear and longer stopping distances. UK MOT testers fail vehicles with leaking dampers, worn ball joints or excessive play.
Common signs of suspension wear
- Bouncing over bumps that the suspension used to absorb cleanly.
- Knocking or clunking from a corner over uneven surfaces — usually a worn drop link or top mount.
- Tyres wearing unevenly on the inside or outside edge.
- Steering pulling to one side on a flat road.
- The nose dives heavily under braking — front shocks losing damping.
Replace in pairs
Always replace suspension components in axle pairs (both fronts or both rears) — fitting a fresh shock absorber on one side and leaving a worn unit on the other creates handling imbalances that can be worse than the original wear.
