Brake Hoses and Pipes: The Plumbing That Carries the Pressure
Between the master cylinder and the calipers, the brake system relies on a network of rigid steel (or Kunifer) pipes and flexible rubber (or braided) hoses to deliver hydraulic pressure. The pipes are inflexible and run along fixed parts of the underbody. The hoses are flexible and bridge the gap from the pipe to the moving caliper (the caliper has to move with the suspension). Both have a finite life on UK roads, and both are MOT-checked at every test.
Rigid brake pipes — steel vs Kunifer
Original brake pipes are usually steel with a corrosion-resistant coating. UK road salt eventually overcomes the coating, the pipe surface starts to pit, and in time the pipe ruptures (often during heavy braking — exactly when you don’t want it). Most UK cars need at least some pipe replacement after 10–15 years.
Replacement pipes for the UK aftermarket are almost universally Kunifer — a copper-nickel alloy that doesn’t corrode. Kunifer is also easier to flare and bend than steel, which makes pipe-fabrication on the car much more achievable for the DIYer. Kunifer pipes are now widely accepted as the better replacement option for UK conditions.
Brake hoses
The flexible hose between rigid pipe and caliper has a rubber outer layer, a reinforcing braid of textile or steel inside, and a rubber inner liner. The braid contains the hydraulic pressure; the inner liner keeps fluid in; the outer liner protects from external damage.
Hoses age in two ways. External cracking — the rubber surface develops fine cracks from age, heat and UV exposure. This is the easy-to-spot warning. Internal bulging — the hose swells under pressure when applied, then doesn’t fully return. Internal swelling can act as a hydraulic accumulator, delaying pad release after braking and contributing to dragged brakes. Internal failure is harder to diagnose — it shows up as a one-sided brake pull that doesn’t track to a seized caliper.
UK average hose life: 8–12 years. Brand-name hoses (ATE, Brembo, TRW) typically last toward the longer end; generic hoses sometimes need replacement at 6–8 years.
Braided steel hose upgrades
For performance use, braided steel hoses (Goodridge, HEL) replace the rubber outer with woven steel and the inner liner with PTFE. The braided hose doesn’t swell under pressure, giving sharper pedal response. The trade-off: braided hoses are stiffer, more expensive, and (where DOT-approved) less compliant with UK regulations than the OE rubber design. For a daily driver, OE rubber is the right choice. For a track-day or performance road car, braided is a meaningful upgrade.
The MOT angle
Brake hoses are checked at every MOT for cracking, swelling under pressure, and chafing against suspension components. A failed hose is an automatic MOT fail. Brake pipes are inspected for corrosion and leaks; a pipe with significant rust pitting can be a fail even before it leaks.
When to replace
Pipes: at the first sign of significant corrosion. Don’t wait for failure. Hoses: at the first sign of external cracking, swelling under pressure, or after 10 years of life. Replace both hoses at a given axle at the same time — a new hose on one side and an old, swelling hose on the other side produces uneven brake response.
Brand
For hoses: ATE, Bosch, TRW (OE-equivalent on European cars); First Line, APEC (mid-market UK). For braided upgrades: Goodridge, HEL. For Kunifer pipes: Comma, RoadRunner, or generic supplied in coils for cut-to-length work. The Kunifer itself is similar across suppliers; the difference is the quality of pre-flared and pre-bent units when buying made-to-fit pipes.
