Fuel Pumps: Tank Pump, Lift Pump and High-Pressure Pump

A modern car can have up to three fuel pumps in series. The in-tank lift pump (always — supplies fuel to the engine). The mechanical lift pump (some diesels — additional fuel delivery). The high-pressure pump (common-rail diesels and direct-injection petrols — generates the rail pressure for injection). Each is a different component with different failure modes and replacement costs.

In-tank fuel pump

The in-tank pump is electric, immersed in fuel, runs continuously when the engine is on. The pump module also includes the fuel-tank sender unit (tells the dashboard fuel level) and often the in-tank fuel filter. Pump failures show as hard starting, engine cutting out under load, or no-start.

Replacement requires accessing the top of the fuel tank — usually through a hatch under the rear seat or boot floor. The pump module pulls out as a single assembly. Brand: Bosch, VDO, Pierburg, Hella.

High-pressure fuel pump (diesel and DI petrol)

The HP pump is mechanically driven from the camshaft, generating the very high pressure required for injection. The pump runs on the fuel itself as lubricant — diesel lubricates the cam-and-roller mechanism. Contamination (water or particulate) kills the pump rapidly.

HP pump replacement is expensive — £1,500-£2,500 typical including labour. Prevention is much cheaper: replace the fuel filter at every recommended interval, and keep an eye on fuel quality.

Brand

Bosch supplies OE HP pumps for most European diesel and DI-petrol applications. Continental and Delphi cover others. The aftermarket parts are remanufactured to OE specification. Avoid generic HP pumps — the engineering tolerances are very tight.
