Glow Plugs: Cold-Start Heat for Diesel Engines

Glow plugs are the diesel-engine equivalent of spark plugs — but with a different job. Diesel engines ignite fuel by compression heat. When the engine is cold, compression alone doesn’t reliably produce enough heat for the first few firing cycles. A glow plug in each cylinder pre-heats the combustion chamber for a few seconds before the starter cranks, ensuring reliable cold starting even in sub-zero conditions.

How they work

An electric heating element in the tip of the plug heats to 850-1,000°C in 2-4 seconds when the ignition is switched on. Modern post-glow strategies keep the plugs warm for 30-180 seconds after start to reduce hydrocarbon emissions during warm-up.

Why replace all four at once

Glow plugs wear electrically over years of cold-start cycles. When one fails (typically catching as a hard-start complaint or a fault code identifying the failed cylinder), the remaining plugs are usually close to end-of-life too. Replacing all four at once avoids a return visit within months.

Brand

Bosch is OE on most European diesels. Beru is OE on many premium German engines. NGK and Denso cover Japanese and some European applications. NGK CZ-series in particular is a strong choice across the UK market.
