Wheel Bearings and Hubs: When the Whine Means Replace

Wheel bearings are the rolling-element bearings that let each wheel rotate freely on its stub-axle or driveshaft. On older cars, the bearing was a separate component fitted into a hub housing; the bearing could be replaced separately. On most modern cars, the bearing is integrated into a complete hub assembly that includes the ABS sensor ring and the wheel mounting flange — the whole unit is replaced as one part.

Symptoms of wear

Whine or hum from one wheel that varies with vehicle speed. The pitch usually rises with speed and can change with lateral load (cornering one way vs the other). Eventually a grinding noise as the bearing fails fully. On integrated-hub designs, an ABS warning light if the integrated sensor ring fails.

Diagnosis

Lift the wheel off the ground, rock it firmly top-and-bottom by hand. Play indicates a worn bearing. Rotate the wheel slowly by hand and listen for rumble. Compare to the other side.

Replacement

On integrated-hub designs, replacement is straightforward — unbolt the old hub from the steering knuckle, fit the new one, torque to spec. On older cars with separate bearings, a hydraulic press is usually required to remove and refit the bearing in the hub.

Brand

OE wheel-bearing manufacturers: SKF, FAG, INA, NSK, NTN, Timken. The OE-equivalent aftermarket parts from these brands are the same components from the same factories.
