Wheel Cylinders: The Drum Brake Hydraulic Actuator

Drum-equipped rear axles use wheel cylinders instead of calipers — small hydraulic actuators that push the brake shoes outward against the drum surface. They’re less talked-about than calipers but fail in the same predictable way: rubber seals harden over years, brake fluid leaks past the piston, friction surfaces get contaminated, and braking effort drops. This guide covers diagnosis, replacement and brand choice.

Construction

A wheel cylinder is a small cylindrical body (usually cast iron with a coating, sometimes aluminium) containing two pistons facing outward in opposite directions. A rubber boot covers each piston end. Brake fluid enters from a port in the middle of the cylinder; pressure pushes both pistons outward simultaneously, applying force to the two brake shoes.

Inside each piston, a rubber seal does the actual sealing — the same kind of cup-shaped seal used in older brake master cylinders.

How wheel cylinders fail

The rubber seals harden over years of brake-fluid exposure. Eventually they leak past — brake fluid weeps out past the piston, runs down the inside of the rubber boot, and accumulates inside the drum. The leak is often hidden until you pull the drum off for a brake-shoe inspection, at which point the contamination is obvious: wet brake fluid on the shoes, the inside of the drum and the backing plate.

Once brake fluid contaminates the brake shoes, the friction compound is ruined. Replacement of both shoes is mandatory in addition to the wheel cylinder repair.

Symptoms before complete failure

The brake pedal feels slightly soft at certain points in its travel. The reservoir level drops gradually with no other visible leak. The handbrake feels unevenly applied between sides (one wheel cylinder is half-leaking, the other isn’t).

Replacement

Wheel cylinder replacement is straightforward but involves the brake shoes. The procedure: lift the rear, remove the wheel, remove the drum (sometimes a screw needs to come out first), remove the brake-shoe assembly (note spring positions carefully or photo before disassembling), unbolt the wheel cylinder, disconnect the brake pipe at the back of the backing plate.

Replace as a pair — both wheel cylinders together. The brake pipe nut will probably need a penetrating-oil soak before it will release. Refit, bleed, adjust the brake shoes, refit the drum, and bed the brakes in with several moderate stops.

ATE, Bosch and TRW supply OE on most European cars. Brembo, Mintex and APEC cover the broader UK aftermarket. The cylinders are application-specific (bore size, mounting pattern, brake-pipe thread vary per car) so match to the OE part number.

Why always replace as a pair

If one wheel cylinder has leaked, the other has been exposed to the same brake fluid for the same time and is approaching the same failure. The labour cost of replacing the second cylinder in three months — including dismantling the brake shoes again — far exceeds the cost of doing both at once. Always replace in pairs.
