ABS Sensors: How They Work, When to Replace, and Diagnosing the ABS Light
An ABS sensor at each wheel feeds wheel-speed data to the ABS module dozens of times per second. The module uses that data not just for anti-lock braking but for ESP (stability control), traction control, hill-hold, emergency-brake-assist and other modern driver-aid systems. When an ABS sensor fails, several of these systems disable themselves automatically — the ABS warning light comes on, the ESP/traction-control warning often follows, and a fault code identifies which wheel has the fault.
How the sensor works
Two main designs are in use: inductive (older designs, still common) and Hall-effect (modern, most cars 2005 onward). An inductive sensor is a coil of wire wrapped around a magnetic core; a toothed iron ring on the hub rotates past the sensor, inducing a small AC voltage in the coil. The frequency and amplitude of that voltage tell the ABS module how fast the wheel is rotating.
A Hall-effect sensor uses an integrated semiconductor that produces a clean square-wave digital output as a magnetic ring on the hub passes by. The output is more robust against electrical noise and the sensor can detect direction of rotation (useful for hill-hold and parking-assist functions).
Common failure modes
Physical damage to the sensor cable from underbody debris. Connector corrosion (the connector usually sits in the wheel arch, exposed to road spray). Internal sensor failure (the coil winding or Hall-effect chip giving up after years of vibration). Damage to the toothed/magnetic ring on the hub (missing teeth show up as irregular pulses; missing magnets short out the magnetic readout).
Diagnosis: code-read first to identify which wheel. Then visual-inspect the sensor and cable for damage. Then measure sensor resistance (typical 1000-2500 ohms for inductive sensors); compare to other wheels. Hall-effect sensors need an oscilloscope or live-data tool to verify output.
Symptoms beyond the warning light
ABS doesn’t engage during hard braking (you feel the wheels lock instead of the ABS pulsing). ESP disabled. Traction-control disabled. Speedometer accuracy may be affected on some cars (the speedometer takes data from the ABS sensors). On modern cars, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keep assist may also disable themselves.
Replacement
The sensor is held by a single bolt at the wheel hub. The connector unclips from the wiring harness in the wheel arch. The whole replacement takes 15–30 minutes per side. Critical detail: route the new sensor cable cleanly through any clips along the underbody — a flapping cable will rub against the wheel or suspension components and fail again within months.
After fitment, clear the fault code with an OBD-II scan tool. Most modern cars don’t need any specific re-learning procedure — the system self-tests on the next drive.
