Brake Calipers: When to Rebuild, When to Replace, and Choosing the Right Reman
The brake caliper is the hydraulic clamp at each disc-equipped wheel. It holds the pads, contains the piston(s) that push the pads against the disc, and either slides on guide pins (single-piston floating design, most common) or has fixed pistons on both sides of the disc (multi-piston fixed design, on performance applications). The caliper is the part where many UK brake problems originate — particularly the rear caliper, where seizure is the single most common reason for MOT brake-balance failures.
How a floating caliper works
The caliper body slides on two guide pins anchored to a mounting bracket. The brake-fluid piston is on one side only (the inboard side); when the pedal is pressed, the piston pushes the inboard pad onto the disc, and the reaction force slides the caliper body so the outboard pad presses on the disc from the other side. The simplicity of single-piston design keeps cost low and is adequate for most road cars.
Why rear calipers seize on UK cars
Rear calipers are smaller and do less work than front calipers. Less work means lower operating temperatures — and lower temperatures means moisture can condense on the slider pins and inside the piston bore between brakings. UK winters compound the problem with road salt. Over years, the slider-pin grease emulsifies with moisture, the rubber boots crack, and the slider pin corrodes solid.
Once one slider pin seizes, the caliper no longer slides evenly on the disc — one pad does most of the work, wears rapidly, and the other side barely contacts the disc. The result is uneven braking force at MOT (a one-sided pull during the rolling-road test) and uneven pad wear.
Symptoms of a seized caliper
Car pulls to one side under heavy braking. One wheel runs hotter than the other after a drive (touch the wheel — careful, hot — and compare temperatures left and right). Uneven brake-pad wear visible at inspection (one side worn down, the other still half-thickness). Fuel consumption creeping up (the dragged brake costs power). A rotor-shaped scoring pattern on the disc that doesn’t match the pad’s position.
Rebuild vs replace
For mildly seized calipers (slider pins corroded but the piston is still moving freely), a rebuild is viable: strip, clean, replace slider pins and boots, re-grease with caliper-specific grease, reassemble. A seal kit and slider-pin kit costs £15-£30 per caliper; the labour is 1-2 hours per side.
For more severely seized calipers (piston also seized, internal corrosion in the cylinder bore, or pitting on the piston), replacement is the right answer. Remanufactured calipers are the standard choice — the body is cleaned and rebored where needed, new piston, new seals, new slider pins and boots.
Brand quality in remanufactured calipers
This is one category where brand differences are striking. The best remanufacturers (Brembo, ATE, TRW, Bosch reman, Cardone) clean and inspect the body, replace any out-of-tolerance components, fit new seals and pins, and pressure-test the finished caliper. Lower-end remanufacturers often just clean and refit — meaning the new caliper has a fresh paint job but may have the same seized-slider problem within a year.
For OE-equivalent results, stay with the OE supplier’s reman where available. ATE on German cars, Brembo on Italian/performance, TRW on UK and broader European. APEC and First Line cover budget-end reman with variable quality.
Always replace as a pair
If one caliper has seized, the other on the same axle is rarely far behind. Replace in pairs to avoid coming back in three months for the other side. Bleed the system thoroughly after fitment — air in the new caliper produces a soft pedal that won’t resolve until properly bled.
