Engine Pulleys: Crank Damper, Idler, Tensioner and Cam Pulleys

At the front of most engines sits a row of pulleys. The crank pulley (often a damper assembly) at the bottom, accessory drive pulleys above it, and cam pulleys at the top of the engine. Together they transmit power from the crankshaft to all the belts and the cam timing system. Each is a specific engineered component, and each can fail in specific ways.

Crank pulley (harmonic damper)

The crank pulley on most modern engines is not a single solid wheel but a damper assembly: a hub bonded to an outer pulley ring through a rubber-and-mass damper. The rubber-and-mass absorbs torsional vibration from the crankshaft. Damper failure shows as a visible wobble at the front of the engine, sudden whine or vibration, and (sometimes) unexplained belt-drive issues. The bolt holding the crank pulley is usually very high torque and requires a holder tool to break loose.

Cam pulleys and cam phasers

The pulley(s) at the top front of the engine driving the camshaft(s). On engines with variable valve timing (most modern engines), this pulley is a cam phaser — an electronically-controlled mechanism that can advance or retard cam timing relative to the crank. Phaser failures show as cold-start rattle, sometimes intermittent misfire, and fault codes for cam timing.

Idler pulleys

The non-driven pulleys that route the belt(s) through their path. Bearings wear over miles; failure shows as whining noise. Replace with the belt service.

Tensioner pulleys

The spring-loaded or hydraulic pulleys that maintain belt tension. Discussed in detail in the drive-belt tensioners guide.

INA, SKF, NTN-SNR, Continental ContiTech for idler and tensioner pulleys. For crank dampers, brand-name OE-equivalent suppliers like Febi, Vaico, Corteco. For cam phasers and cam pulleys, OE specification is critical — match by engine code.
