Fuel and Engine Management: From Tank to Combustion Chamber

Modern engines run on sensor feedback and electronic fuel metering. Every part of the fuel delivery chain — from tank pump to injector spray — is controlled and monitored by the ECU. This category covers the components: fuel pumps, fuel injectors, fuel hoses, throttle bodies, EGR valves, engine management sensors, boost pressure sensors, pressure converters and fuel tank sender units. Together they’re what makes the engine respond to your foot.

From tank to combustion

Lift pump in tank delivers fuel to the engine. On diesels, an electric or mechanical pump pressurises fuel further before passing it to the high-pressure pump. Common-rail diesels store pressurised fuel in a rail (1,500-2,500 bar); the injectors meter from the rail. Petrol direct injection follows a similar pattern at lower pressure (50-200 bar). Throttle body controls air mass into the engine; the ECU coordinates air and fuel to maintain target lambda.

EGR — emissions vs reliability

The EGR valve recirculates a measured portion of exhaust back into intake, lowering combustion temperature and reducing NOx. It’s a measurable emissions benefit. The trade-off: exhaust soot coats the valve over time, eventually causing sticking or failure. On many UK diesels, EGR failure is the single most common cause of fault codes after 80,000 miles.

Sensors

Engine management sensors — crank position, cam position, MAP, MAF, lambda, knock, throttle position, coolant temperature, intake air temperature, EGR position — feed ECU data. When any one drifts or fails, the ECU compensates as best it can but produces fault codes and sometimes drivability symptoms. OE-specification sensors give the right signal calibration; generic substitutes often work but with subtly different responses that leave fault codes you can’t clear.
