Gear Cables: The Linkage Between Gear Lever and Gearbox
Modern manual gearboxes are mostly cable-shifted — two cables run from the gear lever to the gearbox, one for fore-aft selection and one for left-right gate selection. The cables provide precise shift feel and isolate gearbox vibration from the cabin. Over years, the cables stretch slightly and the bushes in the lever and gearbox ends wear, leading to imprecise shift action.
Symptoms of worn cables
Vague shift action — finding gears requires more lever movement than it used to. Difficulty selecting reverse (often the first symptom). Sloppy gate feel between gears. Sometimes a popping out of gear under load.
Replacement
Cables are usually accessed from above (engine bay) or below (transmission tunnel). Replacement is moderately involved and requires precise adjustment of the lever-end and gearbox-end positions. Some cars use a dedicated alignment tool for setup.
